Activating positive transformation with empowerment and education

Transformation in South Africa rests on the pillars of 3 core legislative pieces: B-BBEE, Employment Equity, and the Skills Development Act. Transformation in South Africa rests on 3 core legislative pillars: Employment Equity, Skills Development, and Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE). Together, compliance with these legislative pieces creates opportunities for all South African communities.

Transformation is for everyone, to the benefit of everyone. Inherent to transformation through compliance with the core legislative frameworks, business benefits and socio-economic opportunities are created for all.

The Transformation Movement was created to eliminate the narrative around transformation that centers around penalties and punishment for compliance, focusing rather on the benefits that it holds for all South Africans.

The narrative around transformation in South Africa is often focused on penalties for non-compliance and cheaper or easier implementation, leading to 1) resistance to comply and 2) a checkbox-mindset for compliance. While penalties for non-compliance exists in various forms, compliance that holds true to the spirit of the legislation offers many tangible business benefits and incalculable potential for socio-economic benefits in South Africa.

At the heart of transformation as a driver of sustainable change, is Skills Development. As a priority element of B-BBEE, Skills Development along with Employment Equity legislation should be inclusively promoted and included in B-BBEE narratives. When B-BBEE, Employment Equity, and Skills Development is promoted as the pillars of transformation and implemented with a holistic mindset, businesses can reap tangible benefits for compliance.

A major barrier to achieving true transformation is the negative narratives around this legislation, powered by a lack of true understanding of the legislation and the benefits of compliance. This knowledge gap must be addressed as soon as possible, since South Africa has not seen sufficient progress in transformation for the past 20 years. Gaining the buy-in of the private sector by empowering individuals with trustworthy, positive information is critical and should be achieved sooner rather than later.

The Transformation Movement aims to transcend the private sector and create a true movement of shifting mindsets, bringing stakeholders together, sharing information across the spheres of business, government, and legislation, and sparking positive conversations that empower individuals and organisations to create a cohesive positive movement towards transformation.
